MLSNP16x9

MLS NEXT Pro was launched in 2022 to complete the player pathway between MLS NEXT and MLS first teams, bridging the gap between the elite youth platform and the professional ranks. Now in its fourth season, that pathway has delivered: MLS NEXT Pro recently achieved a noteworthy milestone, 200 MLS first team signings.

Since the League debuted in March 2022, 200 players have signed with MLS first teams after appearing in MLS NEXT Pro – demonstrating the significance of the professional development league within the MLS ecosystem and U.S. Soccer pyramid, as well as the advantage gained through playing experience in MLS NEXT Pro.

Those 200 players benefitted from the roster flexibility created through the pathway, providing the ability for players to move between leagues.

Additionally, in the four seasons of MLS NEXT Pro:

  • 1,000+ MLS-contracted players have been loaned to MLS NEXT Pro teams
    • Example: Alex Freeman (ORL), Patrick Agyemang (formerly CLT), Patrick Schulte (CLB)
  • 1,100+ MLS NEXT Pro players have signed short-term MLS contracts
  • 1,300+ MLS NEXT Academy players have competed in MLS NEXT Pro matches

In MLS NEXT Pro, the best high-potential players are able to prove they're ready for the highest level. They’re playing with MLS first teams and national teams, while some are being transferred internationally. MLS NEXT Pro alumni shine not only in MLS competition, but in competitions such as Leagues Cup, U.S. Open Cup, Gold Cup and more.
