LA Galaxy II to Play Host to National League Champions Wrexham

LOS ANGELES (Monday, May 1, 2023) – LA Galaxy II will play host to National League champions Wrexham AFC in a friendly at Dignity Health Sports Park on Saturday, July 22 (7:30 p.m. PT), it was announced today by the MLS NEXT Pro affiliate of the LA Galaxy.

“We are excited to host Wrexham AFC, a club that has captivated a worldwide audience with their journey shown on Welcome to Wrexham and this year’s promotion to the English Football League’s League Two,” said LA Galaxy President Chris Klein. “We are looking forward to July 22 and giving LA Galaxy II a platform to play an entertaining and exciting opponent.”

Founded in 1864, Wrexham AFC is the oldest soccer club in Wales and the third oldest professional soccer club in the world. Notably, Hollywood actors Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds are co-owners of Wrexham and the club is featured on the FX docuseries Welcome to Wrexham, which chronicles the purchase and stewardship of Wrexham AFC by McElhenney and Reynolds. Wrexham, who play their home matches at the Racecourse Ground, clinched promotion to League Two, the fourth-tier of the English Football League, and won the National League title after defeating Boreham Wood 3-1 on April 22. The promotion to EFL League Two marks the first time Wrexham have reached the fourth-tier of the EFL since the 2007-08 campaign. Additionally, Welcome to Wrexham won Best Sports Documentary at the 7th Critics’ Choice Documentary Awards.

"We're looking forward to our U.S. Tour as we gear up for our return to the EFL. We've enjoyed meeting supporters who have travelled over from America to visit us this season, and it will be a fantastic occasion to play against American opposition in front of more of these new fans," said Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson. “The match against LA Galaxy II promises to be a good, competitive game and will form an important part of our pre-season preparations, along with the fixtures against Chelsea and Manchester United that have already been confirmed."
