MLS NEXT Pro Matchday 24: Recap Blitz

MLS NEXT Pro Matchday 24 saw the 2023 playoff field take another step towards the ultimate.

Defending champion Columbus Crew 2 clinched a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference by way of third-party assistance while emerging Eastern juggernaut New York Red Bulls II clinched their berth outright.

On the flip side - North Texas SC, LA Galaxy II, Real Monarchs, and FC Cincinnati 2 avoided elimination with their respective heroics.

Here is a closer look at all the action Matchday 24 had on show:

FC Cincinnati 2 (2) - NYCFC II (0)

With their backs against the ropes in terms of playoff hopes, FCC2 needed a hero.

Midfielder Malik Pinto put on the cape and delivered a goal and assist to lift his side out of playoff elimination.

That was no easy task against a potent NYCFC II attack, and Pinto couldn't do it alone. FCC2 goalkeeper Paul Walters denied Golden Boot leader Matthew "MD" Myers from the spot in the 87th minute to kill off any thoughts of a late comeback.

Philadelphia Union II (0) - New England Revolution II (3)

New England Revolution II continued their strong form with a 3-0 victory over Philadelphia Union II at Subaru Park.

The first goal came in the 40th minute when Jordan Adebabyo-Smith assisted Joshua Bolam near the top of the box. Bolam's well-placed shot gave his team the lead right before halftime.

Revs II kept up their attack in the final 45 minutes with Marcos Dias scoring twice to secure the 3-0 win.

This victory marked New England Revolution II's 10th consecutive game without a regulation loss. Their last defeat took place on June 18th against FC Cincinnati 2.

Houston Dynamo 2 (0)- LA Galaxy II (4)

This tilt was all about Aaron Bibout.

The 18-year-old Cameroonian striker re-entered the 2023 Golden Boot race with a brace that powered his side to a 4-0 win over Dynamo Dos.

Jonathan Pérez and Galaxy Academy man Julian Placias joined Bibout on the scoresheet in a decisive win that spared Los Dos from playoff elimination in Matchday 24.

Timbers2  (2) - Colorado Rapids 2 (0)

The upset of the weekend belongs to Timbers2, who topped Western Conference leaders Rapids 2 in one of the most surprising games of the 2023 season to-date.

Timbers2, currently 10th in the West, took a swipe at the conference leaders to close out Matchday 24 action. They benefitted from an early own-goal and capitalized on some misdirection in the Rapids 2 backline to earn a much-needed win in terms of the playoff landscape.
