Austin FC II announced today that the Club appointed Jason Shackell as its second-ever head coach. Shackell has been with Austin FC since 2021 as a member of the Club’s academy staff, most recently having served as U-16 Head Coach.
Brett Uttley departs the Club upon the expiration of his contract following three (3) seasons as head coach from 2023 to 2025. Under Uttley, Austin FC II won MLS NEXT Pro Cup and the MLS NEXT Pro Western Conference title in its inaugural year, and won the first-ever MLS NEXT Pro Invitational in 2024.
“We are excited to promote Jason to this new position within the Austin FC development pathway, and we’re confident he will be a good leader for our second team,” said Austin FC Sporting Director Rodolfo Borrell. “In addition, we want to express our gratitude to Brett for all his hard work and dedication over the last three years. We wish him nothing but the best in his next endeavor.”
Originally from England, Shackell played over 500 professional soccer matches in his home country between 2003 and 2020. His career highlights include three (3) promotions to the Premier League with Wolverhampton Wanderers, Norwich City FC, and Burnley FC, winning an EFL Championship title with Wolves in 2009, being selected to the PFA Championship Team of the Year with Burnley in 2014, and winning EFL League Two with Lincoln City in 2019 while being selected to the PFA League Two Team of the Year.
Shackell joined the Austin FC Academy as a U-15 assistant coach in February 2021, following the conclusion of his playing career, and took over as U-16 Head Coach in 2024.
“I’m delighted to step into this new role with Austin FC II, and I’m grateful to the organization for their trust in me,” said Shackell. “It’s a terrific opportunity and I can’t wait to get started next season.”
Shackell will oversee a coaching staff that includes assistant coach Omar Jarun and goalkeeper coach Peter Davis. More details on Austin FC II’s 2026 MLS NEXT Pro season will be announced at a later date.
