Bridgeport, Connecticut (August 29, 2026) — CT United FC surrendered a late lead Saturday night, falling 4-2 to New York Red Bulls II in front of a packed crowd at Knights Field at the University of Bridgeport in MLS NEXT Pro action.
The Coywolves struck first in the 16th minute when leading scorer Barnabas Tanyi finished a chance created by Andre Applewhaite to give CT United an early 1-0 advantage.
Goalkeeper Gunter Rankenburg helped preserve the lead through the first half, making two key saves to keep RBNY II off the scoreboard.
The visitors leveled the match early in the second half when Roald Mitchell capitalized on a defensive mistake in the 61st minute.
CT United responded in the 80th minute, with Bryan Destin finishing a quick attacking play from Tanyi to put the Coywolves back in front, 2-1. It marked Destin's fifth goal in as many matches.
RBNY II, however, responded with three goals in the final seven minutes. Christian Gallagher equalized in the 83rd minute before Mitchell scored his second of the night two minutes later to give the visitors a 3-2 lead. Gallagher added his second goal in the 90th minute to complete the 4-2 comeback.
Despite taking the lead twice, the Coywolves were unable to hold off the late RBNY II surge and fell 4-2. CT United now turns its attention to its next match on September 8 at Atlanta United 2 in Georgia.
